EL PENON DE LAS ANIMAS: In the estate Two Rocks, there live two rival families, the Iturriaga and the Valdivia. The family Valdivia receives with happiness the return of the young daughter Maria Angela who was sent to study in Spain to protect her from the hate and revenge that has been cultivated between the two families. The last one of the Iturriaga, Fernando has returned to recover his grounds. After having found out about his arrival, the Valdivia have decided to hurry the wedding between Manuel and their daughter Maria Angela before Fernando mcan do something to impede the wedding. EL RAPTO: When Aurora (Maria Felix), a tenacious woman of strong character and seductive beauty, came to the picturesque Santiago of Alfaro, she seduces the “honorable” municipal authorities so she can buy the estate of the “missing person” Ricardo Alfaro (Jorge Negrete). When Ricardo returned to his house, and finds out that it is no longer his, immediately he goes to the authorities, while a scandalous and fallacious Aurora, accuses him of having struck her. A trial begins and the authorities decide that a joined ownership will be the best thing for both of them.

María Félix 10 years apart… In the Hispanic film world, María Félix was Mexico’s answer to Joan Crawford (during her 40’s apogée). This pairing sees her at her earliest (El Peñón de las Animas) and also at the beginning of her descent into self parody (‘El Rapto’). ‘El Peñón de las Animas,’ was her debut. It is considered one of the classics of Mexican Golden Era films. A period piece, it is basically a Romeo & Juliet plot (with the Tchaicovsky theme to underline it) and a lot of folk songs performed by leading man, Jorge Negrete, in peak form. It is interesting to watch, if nothing else, for La Félix’s performance before she got her La Doña act together, playing a very submisive young lass in love. (After starring in ‘Doña Bárbara a couple of years later, she acquired her famous Femme Fatale persona both on and off screen and she never let go of it, even when she became past her prime.)
